The Safe and secure plan has three components:

the savings component
the growth component

The protection component consists of the basic car and home insurance, liability umbrella, disability and health insurance. This also includes life insurance. In case the person has a family, all these should make sure the family is able to do whatever they want to do regardless of whoever dies or gets disabled. The person should focus on strategy and not products. For instance, if a person wants to buy life insurance, he should focus on how he is interacting with the insurance company and things like that, rather than on the product. Almost all the insurance companies offer the same products. So, wasting a lot of time choosing between the different insurance companies is not necessary.

The second component in the safe and secure plan is the growth component. This necessitates putting away three to six months of expenses in a very safe and secure account. I am already receiving very thoughtful feedback and more than a few spelling and grammar issues have been caught.

Here are some thoughts/observations on this:

1) By these friends volunteering to help, they have taken on an ownership mindset. I am betting that most will help me spread the word when the book is released. So not only did I save about $800 on editing expenses I will gain some additional eager promoters.

2) Many readers are providing testimonials that I can include in the marketing. Not only is that social proofing for me but it also a step down the consistency path for them. Chances are, those that take the time to write a testimonial will be more than happy to recommend me for presentations and other opportunities. Don’t forget what Ben Franklin said (it’s in the book).

3) Wikipedia has an abundance of volunteers helping to create that resource. Obviously, people are eager to help causes they believe in. They don’t want paid. They just want to be part of something important or special. If you are working on a project that helps others, you will find eager volunteers willing to help you. Ask and you shall receive.

4) The early comments on my Facebook wall from the readers is excellent social proof. So is getting so many volunteers.

5) This crowd-sourcing wouldn’t have been nearly as effective if I hadn’t nurtured these relationships over time. I didn’t launch my Facebook page for crowd-sourcing. I launched it for building relationships and helping people.

6) By allowing people to help on my project, I strengthened relationships. Some even contacted me to talk directly after reading the book.

7) The perception of my authority and expertise on my subject increased. Authors are generally assumed to be experts on their subject matter.

All of this comes back to allowing others to help you. Don’t think you have to be the one that always gives. It is OK to accept too.
