I love Dan Kennedy’s “no B.S.” philosophy.
He was my first influence in the world of direct response, and he continues to provide massively effective marketing wisdom through his monthly newsletters, books, and information products.
Dan has a way of cutting to the quick and eliminating any fluff or unnecessary information.
This list is taken directly from his book “No B.S. Direct Marketing - Direct Marketing for Non-Direct Marketing Businesses” and you’ll be hard pressed to find a clearer, more succinct list when it comes to the criteria that all of your marketing must contain for maximum success.
Rule 1. There Will Always Be an Offer or Offer(s)
Rule 2. There Will Be a Reason to Respond Right Now
Rule 3. There Will Be Clear Instructions on How to Respond
Rule 4. There Will Be Tracking and Measurement
Rule 5. Whatever Brand Building Occurs Will Be a Happy By-Product, Not Bought
Rule 6. There Will Be Follow-Up
Rule 7. There Will Be Strong Sales Copy, Not Vague Hyperbole
Rule 8. In General, It Will Look Like “Mail-Order Advertising”
Rule 9. Results Rule, Period
Rule 10. You Will Be a Tough-Minded Disciplinarian and Keep Your Business on a Strict DIRECT Marketing Diet for at Least Six Months
The only rule that may not apply to you right now is Rule 8, simply because you may not be utilizing offline marketing methods. (Although that may be something to reconsider…)
And perhaps Rule 10, because once you realize that direct response marketing is exactly what the most successful Internet Marketers practice (it’s just direct marketing principles applied online)… forget six months, this is simply how you will market from now till forever.
