It’s Good to Talk to Yourself… Nicely

I once heard something from a self help teacher named Sean Stephenson.

Just so you know, Sean is a 3 foot tall man, permanently confined to a wheelchair, with a physical condition that makes his bones very brittle.

He has had over 200 bone breaks since he was born.

But despite all these setback, which would have buried an average man, Sean has survived… and THRIVED.

To give you an idea, Sean has created an extremely successful public speaking practice (where he tells people to “get off their but’s”), has written self help books (Tony Robbins actually wrote the introduction to one of Sean’s upcoming books), and is constantly in long and fulfilling relationships with beautiful women.

Kind of gives you a different perspective on dealing with challenges, doesn’t it?

Anyhow, one of Sean’s messages is how we talk to ourselves.

He states that “if you talked to your friends the way you talk to yourself, you probably wouldn’t have any!”

And it’s so true.

Why is it that we are so hard on ourselves?

Sure it’s healthy to push yourself. But many times, perhaps even subconsciously, we actually criticize, cut down, and belittle ourselves.

Have you ever caught yourself talking to yourself this way?

It’s a bit disturbing when you catch yourself saying something like, “James you’re SO dumb… how could let this happen? STUPID!”

Sean’s goes on to ask, “Do you talk to yourself like you talk to your best friend? Or your worst enemy?”

The point is, cut yourself some slack.

Most of us are entrepreneurs, and that means we are our own worst critics.

It’s human nature to avoid the good things we do, and to focus on what you do wrong.

That’s the trap.

The point is, next time you catch yourself being unfairly critical on yourself, STOP.

Take a moment to actually give yourself some encouragement or praise on something you did RIGHT.

Your self image will thank you.
